Hookesy's message: life must go on By Michael McGuire and Andrew Ramsey January 28, 2004 THERE were tears and there was laughter, and after a week of mourning there was the knowledge that life, even without former Test cricketer David Hookes, had to go on. In one of the biggest funerals seen in South Australia, more than 10,000 mourners from all walks of life made the journey to Adelaide Oval yesterday to farewell one of the state's favourite sons, who died last week after an alleged assault by a bouncer outside a Melbourne pub. They listened to emotional eulogies from those closest to Hookes, from his brother Terry Cranage, who spoke of the "tragedy of this insane incident"; from his step-children Kristofer and Caprice Gellman; from former teammate Test wicket-keeper/batsman Wayne Phillips, who was with him the night he was attacked; from former Test captain Ian Chappell; and from family friend Leonie Zadow. All agreed that Hookes would want everyone to move on with their lives. "This last week has reinforced the saying 'life is too short'," Ms Gellman said. "So in times like this, when it is almost impossible to make sense of the last week's events, remember: we must live life to the full and make the most of each day, otherwise David will be on your back saying 'c'mon mate, you're here for a good time, not a long time'." Reverend Steve Ogden, dean of St Peter's Cathedral, who conducted the service, said while people had a right to be angry it was not a time to pass judgment. " David himself would not have wanted recriminations," Mr Ogden said. It was a broad audience that heard the message – from the cricket-lovers who watched Hookes make one of his 20 centuries at Adelaide Oval, to the Australian cricket team led by captain Ricky Ponting, the South Australian and Victorian squads and a host of former Australian cricketers including Jeff Thomson, Dennis Lillee, David Boon, Kerry O'Keeffe, Geoff Lawson, Dean Jones, Kim Hughes, Tim May, Ashley Mallett, Merv Hughes, John Inverarity as well as former West Indian captain Clive Lloyd and former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe (actor Russell Crowe's cousin). South Australian captain Darren Lehmann, who was also with Hookes the night he died, carried a bat of the man he described as a "mentor" as the coffin was carried to the hearse. All joined a guard of honour for Hookes as the cortege left to one last standing ovation from the Adelaide Oval crowd. But in a tribute to his broad appeal, dotted among the crowd were also actors Russell Crowe (whose other cricketing cousin Jeff was a close friend of Hookes) and Gary Sweet, boxer Anthony Mundine, golfer Jack Newton, players from the Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs and politicians, including the premiers of South Australia and Victoria, Mike Rann and Steve Bracks. Wife Robyn decided against joining the official party on the oval, remaining out of sight in the grandstand to mourn before moving to a private cremation service in the city's eastern suburbs. Flowers under the old scoreboard and flags at half-mast were a formal tribute, but remnants of the previous day's Australia-Zimbabwe one-day international were reminders of the affection in which Hookes was held by local fans. Hand-made banners decorated the stands, "Hookesy" appropriately was spelt out in empty plastic beer cups on a fence under the Moreton Bay fig trees. Wayne Phillips spoke of the legend of Hookes, created in the 1977 Centenary Test. "If all the people that came and spoke to him and said 'I was there the day you ploughed Greigy for five fours in a row at the MCG', Hookesy's calculations had it that meant there would have been a crowd of 384,000 people," the South Australian coach said. Of the evening that ended Hookes's life, Phillips said little except that "the night of Sunday January 18 saw two groups of two blokes enjoying themselves as one". "What happened next was tragic and will be addressed in the right and proper way." Melbourne radio partner and AFL football great Gerard Healy said after the service that Hookes's "greatest regret was not being at his own wake" which continued in a tent behind the oval. [/i][/size]

Things not good for Australia after winning the first test.
India beat us in the 1st innings and made a good score Australia are batting their 2nd innings Martyn made 104 before being dismissed.
Australia is now 348/8 With India still to bat.

FOR #$%^ SAKE Those bloody southern poms beat us in the bloody one day match. 5 overs to go and they needed to get 9.7 runs per over (6 balls) which is pretty hard and in the 47th over Kasper bowled the worst over ever they scrapped out 4, 4's, 3 and a single and a no ball which went for four then off the last over they needed 5 to win off 6 and the very first ball went straight down fine leg for four then the next 2 were dot balls and then he smacked one over the top to hit the winning run. The beat us with 2 balls to spare. Pretty piss poor effort that, Gilchrist made 68 and a few other jokers stood up and produced some runs. Some new for Ed Hunter South Africa have lossed the series against India which Australia won easily just a few weeks ago lol, see SA in Aussie anytime buddy.

Well I'm happy Australia have tied up the series with another bloody close match against the Kiwi's McGrath got the last wicket first ball into the 47th over and New Zealand were all out just 18 runs short of the Aussies score.
Now I wanna go to Brisbane for the last game which is set to be a thriller. This is Bill Lawry signing off.

Well we sure gave the Pakistanies a royal arse kaning . Beating them in the first test by almost 500 runs. McGrath taking 8/24 in the 2nd Innings I say it was not worthy of being called world cricket and Pakistan lacks the skill and determination to play it. This is Bill Lawry signing off

Well its being played at the MCG, and its $10 for a kid and $20 for an adult which is about 4 or 5 times the normal price for getting in and it sold out today for tickets so the atmosphere is gonna be through the roof. The 2 teams that are playing are the Asian 11 (Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan) Vs the rest of the world which is just countrys like AUSTRALIA, New Zealand, West Indies and 1 English player. I shall be down there bright and early on monday and probably won't leave or get home till Tuesday so its gonna be the best game ever, can't wait for it ;D. Glad you asked TJ I wanted to brag about going to it a bit more

Canada actually holds a record in cricket , and it was against Australia lol, the record is.............lowest score made in a one day innings....26 Not something to be proud of lol. Game starts at 2:10pm which is 4 hours from now so just look for a channel that has it on it in 4 hours ;D WELL IM OFF TO CHANGAS
