Two weeks ago, Olivia Winkler was a healthy and vibrant young woman, happily awaiting the arrival of her second child.

Now the 24-year-old lies in a coma at an Edmonton hospital with organ failure, and doctors are scrambling to find out what's wrong with her.

"Two weeks ago she was perfectly fine, you know, she walked up the street and you'd never know there was something wrong with her," said Olivia Winkler's sister, Jodie. "She was perfectly fine."

Jodie Winkler said the young mother went to the hospital with stomach pains just over two weeks ago and was admitted to hospital. Doctors ultimately discovered she was in liver failure, and her baby was delivered in an emergency cesarean section, six weeks before its due date.

Portia Lenora weighs 3 1/2 pounds and will spend the next month in the hospital's neo-natal unit, but is doing fine, Jodie said.

Jodie said further testing in hospital found Olivia's kidneys were failing as well, and showed swelling in her brain. On Monday she was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton for more specialized treatment, and Jodie says doctors there are doing everything they can to find out what's wrong and how to fix it.

A spokesperson for the University of Alberta hospital said Winkler is in critical but stable condition.

Jodie said Olivia is still in a coma with liver failure.

Olivia's parents, brothers and her partner are all in Edmonton, while Jodie looks after the new baby and Olivia's seven-year-old son, William, in Regina.

Lana Harrison, a longtime friend of the Winkler family, describes Olivia as a "healthy, fit, beautiful, young woman," and said her sudden illness has been devastating to those who know her.

A trust fund has been set up at Conexus Credit Union in Olivia's name to help the young mother, and residents of Milestone, her hometown, have come together to show their support.

Harrison says even those who don't donate money can do something to help.

"I just ask for some prayers," she said. "You know if people can't contribute they could just say a prayer for Olivia and her baby in neo-natal."

Donations to Olivia Winkler can be made at any Conexus Credit Union location.

Yes, she is now with the spirits of your ancestors now I'm very sorry to read that it was neglect, how horrible!!! **sheds a tear** So it wasn't a heart attack like first thought or it was due to lack of medicine, help? ? ? This is such awful news of your nana & family!!!!
