« Reply #50 on: Oct 28th, 2003, 2:59pm By: DEX » For all the priest fans I borrowed this of Rob's some good things in this interview with k.k (ENJOY) PART 1
ROCK HARD - GERMAN MAGAZINE (translated into English) Interview with K.K. Downing Rock Hard: Ken, at least the older Judas Priest fans are celebrating the best news of the year. We?re thrilled! (Laughing) That?s great. We?re getting a lot of requests for interviews from all over the world and we?re thankful for the congratulations. RH: Few people say things like ?Tim was the better singer. Why Halford? Of course there are people who say things like that. I just talked to Tim, yesterday, and he?s taking it very easy - especially because he already had plans to put together his own band. Tim knew from the beginning how hard it would be to replace Rob. I think he had a lot of fun with us and made some experiences no one can take away from him anymore. He worked really hard and learned a lot on tour with Priest ? but sometime he felt that he wants to do his own thing. Priest works within a very tight pattern, so he wasn?t really able to find fulfillment. Now he has the chance to do it, and he knows that for sure. RH: Tim is without any doubt one of the most talented singers and won?t have any problems to find a new band. Right. He was longing for the day to step out of Rob?s shadow. Tim did a very, very good job and now he?s able to be much more creative than with Priest. RH: There?s almost no Judas Priest fan on planet Earth who criticized Tim?s voice ? but he never had the incomparable charisma Rob had. Of course. You can?t outperform Rob, who?s got the reputation being one of the world?s best frontmen. That?s something we already knew before. Just imagine, Queen would be looking for a new singer and would continue under the old name. Me as a Queen fan ? I?d have a real problem. Doesn?t matter how good the new singer would be. We knew this problem would occur. But, what should we have done? Split up and retire? We couldn?t do that. So we tried to continue somehow ? and Tim helped us to move our asses. He brought us back to life and prevented that we get rusty. Hahahahah. Thank you Tim. RH: Some fans criticized that Tim wasn?t involved in the songwriting process. What was the reason? I can?t answer this question properly as I didn?t have a big part in the songwriting process for Demolition. Things like this happen in the best families as well... RH: And who?ll be responsible for the next Priest album? The fans expect Tipton/Downing/Halford ? and they?ll get it. But in the end, the best idea will make it ? doesn?t matter who?s responsible for it. RH: When did you start to plan the reunion? It was a very slow process ? there?s not a certain date. We weren?t in contact with Rob for years and didn?t know anything about his career plannings. Last year we met up a few times and started to build bridges to each other. Here and there a few beers ? and the relationship got better from time to time. And honestly: if you?re putting so much energy and money in two album productions, like we did with Tim ? and if you don?t see a development in the right direction ? in the commercial sense ? then you have to think about some other options. I would lie, if I?d say anything different. RH: Honest words! Yes, I don?t want to beat around the bush. We?re not in the 80?s anymore. The 90?s were damn hard for the whole metal scene; and we got that with all consequences to feel. We weren?t happy with the sales, of course. Nowadays, the kids spend their money on computer games and clothes ? in the past, most of it was spent for the music. If you want to have a chance, then you have to make the right decisions ? even if they?re hard to make, sometimes. RH: Was every one of you for a new beginning with Rob? Or were there some discussions in advance? Scott, for example, stated really early that he wants to have him back in Priest ? and Glenn made statements the other way round. (Laughing) Of course, there were discussions. We talked a lot about the ?if, then... It took a long time, but at the end there was an unanimous decision, and that?s important. RH: Are you here by chance or does Glenn hold himself back deliberately? I told our manager Jayne that I?d like to do a few interviews as I didn?t have any other plans for this week. I don?t know what the others do at the moment. But, it doesn?t matter who?s talking, because the decision is made and has to be explained to the fans. RH: What?s your opinion on Jugulator and Demolition nowadays? I still like a lot of the songs. Both albums brought us through the 90?s ? thus I cannot speak suddenly negatively about the said albums. And the fact that we changed the musical direction...it?s been positive from my point of view. We didn?t want to sound like lame old men ? and Tim wouldn't have wanted it as well. We knew that some fans were not very happy with the new sound. But with Rob, we probably will continue where we stopped with Tim. That?s natural. Do you know what I mean? RH: I think I know what you mean... What do you think about the theory that you produced a very modern album Demolition? like Rob did with Crucible? just to have the best possible commercial effect by producing a traditional Priest album after the reunion? (Laughing) Well, I wouldn?t maintain that... RH: But it would have been a good idea. Perhaps, yes, hahahah. RH: And, is it the first time that you hear about this theory? No, not for the first time... RH: I don?t to say that Demolition and Jugulator were low-quality albums ? but they were a little bit too modern for the hardcore Priest fans. And those fans are now yelling for joy. Yes, I think you?re right...hahahah. RH: Knowing this, it was quite clever making an album like Demolition. I think it?s natural that a band tries to reach new fans and keeping the old ones in the back of the head. That?s not really fair ? but it?s human. We learned from errors. We know exactly who the real fans are ? and we don?t want to disappoint them. RH: You know that you?re not forced to record an album of the century? like Painkiller? especially after an album like Demolition- to make your fans happy. A solid, half-way traditional album would be enough... (Laughing) I know... RH: Means, the things happened in the past make sense and everything will end up in a happy end, right? I do not only have this feeling since yesterday...hahahah. RH: And Rob held back all the traditional stuff he didn?t use for Crucible... Very good. If it?s like this...let?s start immediately. RH: Did you listen to any of Rob?s demo tapes? No, we?re not this far, yet. Of course...all of us already got a few ideas and already recorded them ? and they?ll be played at the next band meeting. I?m really looking forward to it. RH: Are you going to play some shows this year? Some secret warm-ups, perhaps? We talked about it. But we have to seal a record deal first. After that, we?ll talk about our live activities. If you ask me, I?d go on tour immediately. It would be perfect to start the album production in Autumn and playing some shows before Christmas. Time will tell... RH: One or two surprise shows would be cool... Of course! I?m very excited about going on stage with Rob after such a long time...hahahah. I?m really looking forward to the first show... RH: Let?s talk about the record company: Is it true that your US-Label Atlantic refused to release a third album with Tim on the vocals? We heard that the European company (SPV) put pressure on you as well... I don?t know anything about that. These rumors were spread all over the Internet, that true, but SPV treated us very fair. If we recorded another album with Tim, it would have been distributed through SPV as well. On the other hand I know that an album with Rob has got a different commercial power. I don?t want to deny it. RH: Ok, let?s not beating around the bush. How important is money? Not as important as you might think. Priority, for me personally, has got the acceptance of the Priest fans. If I work hard and if I spend most of the year on tour, then I?m frustrated playing in half-empty places. If there are more people watching you, you?ll earn more money - that's clear. But I would be completely happy, if I?d earn the same sum like in the past few years, but playing in bigger sold-out places. RH: Very diplomatic ? respect. Did you already discuss the setlist of the reunion tour? Is it possible for fans to vote for their favorite songs? This would be the best way. We already did it once ? and we were surprised how different the tastes of our fans are. But it would be definitely the best way to involve the fans. RH: A big advantage of the Halford/Priest split was the fact, that I as a fan could listen to more classics than usual. Rob played ?Stained Class?, ? Running Wild? or ?Jawbreaker? ? Priest played ?Beyond The Realms Of Death?, ?Desert Plains? and ?Turbo Lover?. I?d appreciate if you would keep on playing some of these jewels... This will be the case. Everyone of us has its favorite he wants to dig out... RH: For example? ?Starbreaker?. That?s one of my personal favorites. But it won?t be easy to put all the interests on one setlist.

RH: Will you play some songs from ?Demolition? and ?Jugulator?? That?s not a good idea. Same for the Halford songs. Otherwise we won?t have enough space for the old classics...and the new songs. I can imagine that Tim will join us on stage to sing a duet with Rob... RH: That would be a great gesture. Yes, indeed. Tim and Rob wouldn?t mind it at all. RH: Back to the reunion: have there been any problems with Rob?s management? Everything?s solved now, but we heard that there have been some problems in the past. Our management company ?Trinifold? was bought by ?Sanctuary?, but is still responsible for Priest. I don?t think Rob has got a problem with it ? John Baxter is still working for him. RH: Everyone?s comparing this situation with what has happen with Maiden. Dickinson back with Maiden, Rob back with Priest. Annoying? No, I understand the comparisons. Many Maiden fans didn?t accept Blaze ? now Bruce?s back. The situation was quite similar with Priest. RH: Maiden and Priest: two flagships of European heavy metal ? but you don?t like each other very well... (Laughing) Well, you?re not completely wrong with that... RH: Could you imagine a tour with Maiden? Hmmh...possible. But I think that Rod Smallwood wouldn?t be very happy... RH: Former Maiden singer Paul Di?Anno admitted in his autobiography that he was mainly responsible for the bad air between Maiden and Priest... Paul apologized personally to me ? what a great gesture. But he wasn?t the main reason for the rivalry. At the time of ?British Steel? Priest was the bigger band and Maiden was the supporting act. They were saying that they?ll blow us off the stage without any problem ? well, I thought their behavior wasn?t very nice. I?d have loved to send them home to take another band with us, who would have appreciated the chance. But we were told not to do it as it would have looked like we were frightened by them. So we kept on going...but they were very arrogant. And I remember the main rehearsal before the tour when there were a few guys hanging around in the room who didn?t say a word and watched everything we did ? every step we made and every move of the stagelights. I wasn?t very pleased and asked the guitar tech to tell the guys to leave the place. Don?t get me wrong: I?m not too good not to play in front of the supporting band ? but they could have asked at least, if it was OK to attend the rehearsal. We went on tour and they didn?t blow us off the stage, of course. Hahahah. I watched quite a lot of the Maiden shows, but the reaction of the audience wasn?t very explosive ? because the fans were waiting for us. OK, Maiden became one of the biggest bands of the metal scene ? and I?m proud of them. We made a big mistake by focussing more on the US than on Europe after releasing ?British Steel?. Means, we lost a lot of attention at home. In the US we were quite big ? and Maiden asked us for a support slot on our US tour. We said yes ? and the same old story happened again. It had a lot to do with rivalry and jealousy. RH: What would you say to Steve Harris, if you both bumped in each other? I?d buy him a beer ? because it?s an old story. Like I already said, I?m proud of what Maiden achieved and of what they did for the British metal. It might sound stupid ? but it?s true. RH: This means that there?s a possibility of a tour with Maiden or both bands playing the same festival. Yes. But who?s going to headline the festival shows? RH: Well, then do a two-days event. One day it?s Priest, the other day it?s Maiden... That?s probably the best idea I've heard for a very long time...hahahah.

« Reply #55 on: Nov 3rd, 2003, 10:34am By: TROLL »Jayne Andrews Monday, November 03, 2003 5:42:34 AM To Dean Kelly and everyone else making comments about release dates - please be aware that we do not decide on the release dates - we always would much prefer a simultaneous worldwide release but different territories have reasons why they won't always agree to it - originally I was told the US and Canada would be releasing the DVD on 18th November (it is 17th November in Europe etc.) which was fine with us then suddenly I was told that it won't be released until 9th December due to transferring to NTSC....Japan aren't releasing it until March 2004 - that is a better time for them sales wise apparently. Don't you think it would be much better for us to release it everywhere at the same time - we would much prefer that - what benefit do you think we get out of delaying it anywhere......? There are always reasons why these things happen and they are down to the individual label in the specific territory - NOT US!!!!!!! Sorry but it's out of our hands!
hard times for u in Canada / USA harder still for the ppl in japan but i ll have the dvd in 17 days
