Hello Lovelies,

This is a message from sinead. This being a very special anniversary for me, I have chosen it to announce that as of July 2003 I shall be retiring from the music business. In order to pursue a different career.
The last recordings I will make will be (believe it or not) a track for Dolly Parton's upcoming tribute album and a track for sharon Shannon's forthcoming album. These will be recorded in May.
In July I will be releasing a DVD of a live show and documentary featuring tracks from way back along with tracks fom Sean Nos Nua. The DVD will be entitled "Goodnight, thankyou. You've been a lovely audience."
And so ye have.
I wish here to thank everyone who has been a fan and or supporter of mine over the last twenty two years in the music business (first record at 14, deal at 17. Half o first album wrote when 15). As well as all the people whom I have had the honour of working with. Not least the great Dolly Parton herself!
Thanks to all of ye for a great time and a great education.
I would request that as of July, since I seek no longer to be a "famous" person, and instead I wish to live a "normal" life, could people please afford me my privacy. By which I mean I would like not to have exploition of my self or my name or anyone connected with me by newspapers.
I also mean that (with love) I want to be like any other person in the street and not have people say there is Sinead O'Connor. As I am a very shy person, believe it or not. So I ask with love, that I be left in peace and privacy by people who love my records too. And I hope it doesnt sound rude. It aint meant rude. I am glad that ye are helped by my songs. So help me too, by giving me what is best for me, a private life.
My advise to anyone who ever admires a so called "celebrity" if u see them in the street, dont even look at them. If u love them, then the lovingest thing u can do to show them so is leave them alone and don't stare at them! Or bang on restauraunt windows when they in there. Or make them get their picture taken, or write their names on bits of paper. That's pieces of them.
And one day they wake up with nothing left of themselves to give.

I saw her supporting INXS on their Kick tour she was very good vocaly but a bit of an odd ball as a person relegion should never get in the way of music but they breed to Do Not Like........

least she done the prince song great justice when she done it........

Yes, religion shouldn't be a factor in the music industry BUT I like bands that voice their own opinions. I should've lived in the 60's, lmao. Anyhow, when I look at the Dixie Chicks for stating their opinions about BUSH/War/Etc...I think that they have the right BUT they did cross the line of ppl NOT supporting them professionally which is sad and poor choices of the band!With Sinead - That Pope thing was out of her depression era. It was a spur of the moment from her Bi-Polar disorder. I've done alot of research on Sinead and she is now officially a Catholic Priest in Dublin. Anyhow, vocally she is phenomenal! Sings the socks off of alot of vocalists around today ...Thanks for the input on Sinead! Do you know of any other bands that have called it quits to ADD to this thread...I found it difficult when SOUNDGARDEN Called it quits!

BIG SUGAR

Big Sugar, Heated (Capricorn 1999) - Big Sugar is one of Canada's best-known bands, racking up hit singles, gold and platinum albums, and a reputation as one of the country's loudest and most popular live acts. The new album, Heated, blends elements of 70's classic rock, reggae, and psychedelia to produce a solid mix.

Big Sugar features a power trio rock sound, with Gordy Johnson on guitar and vocals, Kelly Hoppe on keyboards, sax, and other instruments, and Garry Lowe on bass. Based in Toronto, Big Sugar released its first album in 1992. The band's lineup has changed over the years, but not their focus on the word "Big," as in big cars, big amps (Marshall stacks), and big guitar sound.

Heated is focused on building American success for the group, and includes the Canadian No. 1 single, "The Scene," together with the top ten hits, "Better Get Used To It" and "Diggin' A Hole."

Has there ever been a Canadian band quite like Big Sugar? Who can they be compared to? More pointedly, who can compare to them? Music is a fickle pursuit and it seems that many bands are defined by a single or two, perhaps a couple of albums. In Big Sugar there lies however a more precious commodity. Here is a Canadian act that has aggressively pursued its muse, courting risk at every turn and assuring their future in the process. Always re-inventing, repositioning, re-contextualizing and not once bowing to a challenge, they have never sounded like anything but themselves. For better or worse, from good times to bad and back again, they have become storied and bigger than life – and they have fostered a Great Canadian Eccentric who will eventually become sanctified as such and books will be written about him.

Starting life as a darling of Queen St and shouting the blues in his jazz-inflected three-piece, Gordie Johnson’s Grand Adventure quickly asserted its unique path through the pop culture landscape of the nineties. How jarring it was to hear the spooky, bedeviled howl of “Wild Ox Moan” amidst the excesses of both Grunge on the one side and Dance music on the other. Big Sugar became for us, devotees of new music, a reliably surprising act. Each successive single recapitulated the “otherness” that symbolizes them to this day.

In this desirable residence somewhere above everybody else, Johnson won the freedom to do as he saw fit; making his own scene and waiting for us to fall in. His determination to bring Caribbean sensibilities to the music of the Great White North has made for some bizarre and thrilling spectacle. His effortless appropriation of any style that moved him would find grace in the keen production and uninhibited playfulness of those great singles... and how many of these songs have become as immutable as the land upon which we stand? “Diggin’ a Hole”, “If I Had My Way”, “Turn the Lights On”. Each one is marked by adventurous, almost reckless production – indulgent in all the right ways. Listen to the far-off Sound System piano plodding away behind the band in “Turn the Lights On.” Here Big Sugar attempt that most ill-fated of endeavours – North Parallel Reggae. And they pull it off.

Who else has fought so visibly to evolve and who else has placed such trust in its audience to follow? In the end, it may be this respect for the listener that becomes Big Sugar most. Only a fool would expect the same thing twice from Gordie Johnson and a quick glance at their message board will confirm that a Big Sugar fan is a deeply dedicated one.

Watching the current manifestation of Big Sugar, one will see displaced Newfoundlanders spilling a tear over the stirring and compassionate Celtic hurrah that is “All Hell for a Basement”, while the entire room will unite in dance to the dubbed-up workout of “Nashville Grass”. Then we’re at a Rock Show, and the most versatile band you’ve ever seen is dive-bombing through “Ride like Hell”. Then you remember that somewhere else, in a smaller room filled with the lucky hundred, Johnson could well be extending dub-wise with AlKaline or anguishing a single plaintive note through forty-five minutes of eerie ass-pocket blues.

Or in another even smaller room, he’s presiding over the sound board for a new generation of defiantly self-possessed bands like the Trews, Les Respectables and John Ford – sharing his charmed ear and buying a bucket of chicken to keep everybody’s fingers greasy.

In the end every band must come and go, unless they figure out how to come again. And again. And again.

Big Sugar have lived to see the triumph of their art in Hit & Run.

Any gambler would tremble at the delicious prospect of the long-shot that always wins.
