W.A.S.P. + DragonForce
London - 9th May 2004 Well well my the start of the night began at around 3pm when myself and my friend started to que up outside the Astoria in central London. A very boring 4 hours followed but we had some funny moments with a couple of friendly guys who were next to us. The doors finally opened just after 7pm and we rushed into the front row, but there wasnt much to worry about seeing as we were the 2nd people in the que. So anyway we secured our place in the centre of the front row and had to wait another hour before the venue filled up and the opening band were ready to go. DragonForce, a new up and coming band from London opened the night with some great metal, easily the best band ive heard that has started within the last 5-6 years, they were amazing, very melodic power/speed metal and definetly the fastest band in the world, or so they announcer says ;D But they played a very short set of maybe about 4 songs which was disappointing but still heavy to say the very least. As DragonForce left the stage, with a very pleased crowd cheering, the roadies began setting the stage for W.A.S.P.. During this time the crowd were going crazy and screaming for Blackie Lawlessand at around 9:20pm the opening music began to play, it was the song Overture from their new album "Neon God", the lights are all out, people going crazy and in one quick explosion W.A.S.P. were onstage playing the opening riff to On Your Knees. What a great way to start the show, it turned out that they were going to play a medley to start things off, On Your Knees, Inside The Electric Circus and Hellion were the 3 songs of the medley, this really got the crowd pumped up, the atmosphere was building and they go straight into Chainsaw Charlie (one of my highlights) with everyone getting into the song Blackie was getting the crowd even more into it. Darrell Roberts (the new guitarist) did a good job on the solos and lead breaks. The next 3 songs, Animal, Love Machine and Wild Child were just great. Ill always remember the song Love Machine as long as i live because that was the song that Mike Duda (the bass player) pointed over to me and during the solo leant over the stage and gave me his pick. I just felt so great after that, especially since he kept coming back over to me singing chorus right in my face, it was amazing. The last song of the set was I Wanna Be Somebody, and i have never heard a crowd as loud as i did last night singing the chorus to that song, we went f@!&ing crazy. When it was all said and done the band gave a very big thank you to the crowd for being such a great audience (damn right we were ;D) and Mike Duda gave my friend his sweaty towel lol. We definetly left the show thinking wow, we really weren't expecting it to the that great. Highlights: Mike Duda giving me his pick Chainsaw Charlie, I Wanna Be Somebody, Love Machine Meeting the guitarist and singer of DragonForce, very nice guys, very down to earth. And leaving the show with 3 picks (2 of Mike's and one DragonForce) Low point: The only thing that annoyed me about that show was the some prat threw a cup of water at Blackies head....GIT! sorry for the long review.
