Richard Kruspe-Bernstein, guitarist & principal songwriter for Rammstein, doesn't pause long before he describes the German sextet's music.

"Rammstein is metal and pop," Kruspe-Bernstein said via A.J., the hard-working interpreter. "I think we're the first group to combine metal and pop."

Let's just say the metal aspect of Rammstein outweighs the pop. That'll be obvious tonight when the band co- headlines a Verizon Wireless Amphitheater show, The Fire and the Fury, with Staind. Touring with its latest album, "Mutter," Rammstein is making waves courtesy of a fire-powered live show and a sound that's captivating metal and even some industrial music fans though the band sings, loud and proud, in German.

"Rammstein is very German in its music," Kruspe- Bernstein explained. "And the reason is before I started working with Rammstein I was working in many different groups. I had gone to California and listened to a lot of music. I realized I had been living a lie. Culture and climate are instrumental in shaping the music and how people make their music. I went back to Germany and started making music that is characteristically German."

Rammstein did not set out to be a hit among people whose command of German begins and ends at, say, "Wurstfest."

"To be honest, when you're engaged in creating art you should not be concerned with commercial success. You should be concerned with integrity," he said. "But we were very surprised we had such success on an international level. We quickly realized it's important to write songs to fit the language. It doesn't matter what language, it makes sense.

"The major problem with other groups is they assimilate and imitate American music and that's not successful. In the process they sacrifice their language. They copy the music and superimpose their own language on the music." One vital element is something that transcends any type of music, the show itself. Rammstein is becoming notorious for a pyrotechnic-filled presentation that features flames coming from everywhere.

"We try to keep the music and the show in balance," Kruspe-Bernstein said. "If I see that people are coming to the show just to see fireworks, I would quit doing it. I'm a musician. I create, compose and play. Effects complement the music."

The flip side is Kruspe-Bernstein is disappointed that, for this tour, Rammstein will be unable to show off its full production capabilities.

"We hope we can bring the whole show back to the United States in October," he said. Kruspe-Bernstein is joined in Rammstein by Till Lindemann (vocals), Christian "Flake" Lorenz (keyboards), Paul Landers (guitar), Oliver Riedel (bass) and Christoph "Doom" Schneider (drums). Kruspe- Bernstein writes the songs. A challenge Rammstein has faced as a band is overcoming some negative publicity. The German press reportedly called Rammstein Nazis. All Music Guide says the shooters at Columbine High School listened to Rammstein.

"I think when you're creating art it's important to retain a healthy naivet鬢 Kruspe-Bernstein said. "I think the problem in Germany is the whole thing was represented in a strange manner. And then it was presented too strong outside the country. For 'Mutter' I wrote a song, 'Links 234,' in order to express ourselves when people want to pigeonhole us politically. It means our heart is actually on the left. That's how it beats. One of the things we do is to provoke people. We want to provoke people to think."

As the Knorkator release party was in Berlin today, I didn't only interview Alf Ator, but rather Paul was so nice and said "yes" to an interview right away. So, hold on:

About the new album
Paul said they didn't take a break for the whole time; rather they were in the studio the whole time and practiced new songs. That is why it was so silent the whole time. Now there are about 25 songs. Soon they will listen to them together with their friends and acquaintances and will decide which of them will be thrown out. 14 songs will remain. Normally there are only 11 songs. The rest will probably be released on singles, but they don't know yet exactly.

What are the new songs about?
Paul said the new disc will be fantastic! The album is about love. "Ohne dich" will be on it! Another song, which is called "Nein" at the moment, is about this "Cannible is looking for someone to eat up" story (In Germany, some man found another man through the internet who actually wanted to be eaten, and did so with a camera running), which Till thought was so great that he made a song from it. This one seems to be a real firecracker on the record. Paul thinks the song won't keep the name "Nein", but rather something like "Schlachter" ("Butcher") or "Der Metzger" ("The slaughterman").

About the DVD
It will come out at Christmas and includes all music videos. Even the unreleased "Das Modell" video. As for live recordings, he couldn't say anything directly, but it seemed there would only be live songs for which there is also a video. Paul thought "Stripped" would be there since it was also relatively played so little.

When will the next tour be?
An important queston as well. Paul thought they would play in festivals in the summer and that there would be a small tour in Germany in the fall. Whether or not they will have another Fan Evening where they present the new songs, is not set yet.

Which songs have never been played live...
Also a question which is often asked. "Alter Mann" was played live a few times but that number was thrown out because the song is so slow and the crowd didn't like it so much. They have never played "Eifersucht" live though! Paul thought they would certainly play it on the next tour; he thought the setlist could do with something fresh and some new wind.

"Spieluhr" was also planned as a single first, but the song didn't come along like that with Rammstein. It became too slow and therefore they replaced it with "Halleluja", although that was already brave, as hardly anyone knew this song. The same applies to "Engel". They don't really like playing it because it is so slow live. It just sounds better in the radio and studio version.

About the "Jeder Lacht" / "Biest" story
The New Year's 94/95 party in the Saalfelder Klubhaus said something to Paul. And "Jeder lacht" definitely said something to him. He thought the song wasn't so great so they just used the lines "Nichts ist für dich, nichts war für dich, nichts bleibt für dich" for "Adios" later. "Biest" didn't say anything to him at all, but when I described he song, he thought it was the first version of "Tier", that they played earlier.

And all the setlist names from the Saalfeld concert like "Ja und nein", "Rammstein 2", "Böse Leidenschaft", etc. are all total nonsense. Paul thought the songs never had such titles! That's why he couldn't even start with "Biest". It seems someone wanted to make this bootleg even more valueable, so they gave the songs fake names. Paul thought he would download the song soon from herzeleid.com and then would see what it is.

Another little related story from him:
The song Herzeleid originated when Till found a board in the loft, on which the phrase "Wahred einander vor Zweisamkeit, denn kurz ist die Zeit die ihr zusammen seid" was written. You normally hang such boards on the kitchen wall, but Till altered the phrase a bit, and so the song Herzeleid was formed.

And something more:
Rammstein have absolutely nothing against concert recordings, they find such things quite enjoyable. Only their label boss has something against it. Just to make it clear once again!

That's it. I didn't want to ask more questions because Paul surely had other things to do. I thought it was really nice of him to take the time and really tell the inside story.

The kings of pyrotechnics don't disappoint as they light up the joint.



Rammstein, German industrial band, big expectation. Hey they were going to be loud and perhaps a little scary.

Opening the night were Apocalyptica. These classically trained Finnish cellists threw caution to the wind with an animated performance. They rocked out! Accompanied by a drum kit and an impressive light show they warmed up the audience nicely for the main act.

During the interlude the stage was made up to look like a sinister looking old building. Okay, so here comes the scary bit. Die hard fans were ready and able - as soon as the transformation was complete Rammstein walked on to a roar of applause.

And what an opening - drummer Christoph Schneider sat twenty feet in the air on top of the set. He laid down the heavy beat to welcome the rest of the band to the stage. Guitarists Richard Kruspe-Bernstein and Paul Landers appeared next to him then were dropped to the main stage on small platforms. Last but not least vocalist Till Lindemann emerged from the sliding doors centre stage and released his croaky German tones upon the audience, much to everyone's enjoyment.

Throughout the show there was an abundance of special effects. There were lasers, fire all over the place and explosions galore. It was almost like there had been a sale at a pyrotechnics shop.

Apart from one song, the entire show was performed in the bands mother tongue. ‘Amerika’, the only song with an English spoken chorus, had the crowd singing [yelling] throughout the arena. The fact you couldn't understand most of what they were singing was irrelevant, their whole presence engaged and entertained for the duration.

Aside from being incredibly loud this band certainly know how to put on a show. They changed costumes almost every other song. Their outfits included, to name a few, German army uniforms and lederhosen. The highlight of this organised chaos, for me, though was when Lindemann came out dressed as a butcher. With his mic disguised as a knife he pushed a large cooking pot onto the stage. About half way through that particular song keyboardist Christian "Flake" Lorenz popped out of the pot and had to deal with his cook attempting to set fire to him with a flamethrower and chasing him with a knife at the same time. Wholesome family entertainment, ladies and gentlemen!

When not being boiled alive ‘Flake’ played a couple of rhythms that were fitting for the event. Aside from straightforward playing he also used a few samples of a choir and somebody screaming to accompany the music.

Encores were expected and duly dispatched. Each came with more costume changes and a few cannons firing confetti and smoke into the air, so much so that you couldn’t see anything further than two feet away.

The show became more tongue in cheek as it proceeded. At some points it almost became a parody of heavy metal. These guys clearly, and rightly so, don’t take themselves too seriously.

Just don't invite Lindemann around to do the cooking!

[21:31] <Paul> Most ideas come directly from the band. For the last outfit, we had the idea to combine Bavarian folkloric outfits with industrial.

RAMMSTEIN WIN MTV EUROPEAN MUSIC AWARD

Last night, Rammstein won the MTV European Music Award in the category "Best German Act" in Lisboa & thank all their fans for the numerous votes, that resulted in the award!
