LOS ANGELES, September 12, 2003 -- Emmy-winning actor John Ritter died at a Burbank hospital, reportedly due to a heart condition that had gone unnoticed. He was 54.
Ritter, the youngest son of singing cowboy Tex Ritter, reportedly fell ill on the set of the ABC sitcom 8 Simple Rules ... For Dating My Teenage Daughter yesterday and died last night. More News On Ritter: "All of us at ABC, Touchstone Pictures and The Walt Disney Co. are shocked and heartbroken at the terrible news of John's passing," the network said in a statement.
His son wife and actor son, Jason, 23, reportedly were at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center when he died.
Ritter, best known as Jack Tripper on the long-running series Three's Company opposite Suzanne Somers and Joyce Dewitt, would have turned 55 on Wednesday. He apparently had a heart condition that had gone undiagnosed.
"It's just stunning, unbelievable," his longtime assistant Susan Wilcox said. "Everybody loved John Ritter. Everybody loved working with him. Whatever set he was working on, he made it a very fun place."
According to a published report, the cause of death was dissection of the aorta, the main artery in the torso. He died shortly before 10 last night.
Ritter, married to actress Amy Yasbeck since 1999, leaves behind four children, including son Jason Ritter, a cast member on the new CBS drama Joan of Arcadia. He previously was married to Nancy Morgan.
His father died in 1974 due to a heart attack, 10 days before his 70th birthday.
The Los Angeles native, born Sept. 17, 1948, Ritter went to Hollywood High School--he was student body president--and started acting while at USC in the late 1960s.
One of his early television appearances was as a contestant on the The Dating Game in 1967. He later appeared regularly on the The Waltons.
Three's Company, which first aired in 1977 and ran through 1984, made him a star and earned him various Emmy, Golden Globe and People's Choice awards.
Ritter also starred in Hooperman (1987-89) and Hearts Afire (1992-95), both of which also were on ABC.
All along, he made numerous guest appearances on television, starring in more than 25 TV movies, including Unnatural Causes, which won him an Emmy nod for best actor. He also worked as an executive producer on the ABC show Anything But Love in the late '80s and early '90s.
Film credits include They All Laughed and Noises Off, both directed by Peter Bogdanovich, Sling Blade, Skin Deep and Problem Child.
On the stage, he appeared in more than 50 plays, including a nine-month Broadway run in Neil Simon's The Dinner Party.

The day that I did found out I sat down and rememberd how much his acting, comedic abilities brought good feelings to me and my life, he will definitley be missed by all and quite a bit by me ! Just about a week ago my boyfried baught a kid's cartoon caracter sleeper for our son and I thought it was so cute and thoughtful! The reason being is that John did the voice of Clifford the big red dog! My daughter loved and still loves this show and I will miss hearing his voice. I always watch Three's Company late at night and I still enjoy how funny he really was and how much of a wonderful human being that he was to all! R.I.P John . He touched my heart what can I say, he will always be in my heart .[/glow]
