« Reply #1 on: Oct 24th, 2003, 3:41pm » I've Had Numerous Animals Over My 30 Yrs...
Hmmm, Where To Begin, lol
At Age 5, Had A Duck, Puppies, Dogs, Pigeon, Spider, Gerbils, Stray Cats...
My Dad Loved ALL Animals & If He Found Any Animal Stray Home It Came
When My Sister & I Were Raised By Our Grandparents We Never Had A Cat Again But We Had ALFIE The Dog... She Was My Absolute Best Friend Through Some Tough Childhood Dilema's She Died Sept. of 91 From Old Age (14 Yrs)
In That Time Frame Of Growing Up, I Had A Hermit Crab, Hamsters, Budgie Bird (Jimmie) Which My Blind Uncle Gave To Us...He Died Very Old A Few Yrs Ago... We Got A Mate For Him About 8 Yrs Ago Named Shinoa...She Died In My Hands Which Was Very Hard On Me...
We Within The Last 12 Yrs, Have Had Cari Our Dog Which Was Part Golden Retriever & German Sheppard... He Died At 14 Yrs (Almost 2 Yrs Ago), We Had Him Cremated For The Boys & Is Sitting In An Urn On Our Stereo Suboofer...My Rockin' Cari-bum As We Nicknamed Him
I've Had Quite A Few Cats In The Last 14 Yrs...
But My Best Friend Is My Cat Now... She Is Exactly 2 Wks Younger Than Our Oldest Son... Which Is 11 Now...
Then We Fell Victim To Pure Sorrowfullness, Brought In A Stray Cat This Summer Which Was Freezing All Winter & Was In Our Appletree Catching Birds... We Call Her Hunter... Anyhow, Over The Summer Hunter Kept Getting Bigger Bigger In The Stomach & Well, We Now Have 3 Kittens Running Around Here
We've Decided To Keep The Matching Kittens The Calico Brown/Orange Cats... Named Sascha & Jinx
Haven't Decided What To Do With The One Kitten & The Mother Cos We Can't Have 5 Cats...
Oh & We Have A LARGE Oscar Fish Which Hubby Got About 7-8 Yrs Ago... He's Our Buddy That One...
Okay, That's All I Can Think Of...

« Reply #3 on: Oct 27th, 2003, 3:17pm By: MAC »Nice that you started this thread TJ As a kid we had all kinds of pets. The first dog I remember, was our Dachshund Karen. Over the years we had ponies, chicken, geese, hamsters, rabbits,... The dog I loved the most was our St. Bernard-dog Barry. He was huge, very sweet and drooled a lot. He was friends with everyone except the man who delivered gas at our house. Barry always got outrageous whe he saw that guy (I suppose that man hit him once). When I got married our houserental-contract said that we were forbidden to keep pets. But I persuaded my landlord that a bird wouldn't do much harm. So we bought our parakeet , Mac (yes I got my nickname from him). I guess he was a bit too young at the time because he was so clumsy in the beginning, the poor thing. Anyway, I spent hours with him to make him tame which succeeded very well (but I failed in learning him to say a few words). Mac is 13 years old now, a real artist in the air, very self-aware (I really believe that Mac thinks that he's bigger than he actually is, you know like some chihuahuas think they are as big as a German sheperd). He likes showers in the kitchen sink, eating crisps (only salted ones), afternoon naps and trashing paper. Most of the time he is not very noisy but sometimes he can have his moods. In the morning he can be irritated. Mac had a friend for a few years. When he was 2 years with us, my husband came home with a big parakeet. (I don't know how you call this in English, in Flemish it's called a 'falcon-parakeet', it looks a bit like a cockatoo, but smaller). It was a yellow beauty we called Pookie (you know like Garfields' bear). She was such a sweet thing, we always had to cuddle her and she was the happiest bird in the world. She died 4 years ago because of a stroke. The vet came twice, but nothing helped. She died in my hands and it took me quite a while to get over it. I really like animals but the problem is I can't leave them behind for a long vacation. When we had our Mac 3 years and Pookie 1 year, we had a little vacation in Holland (5 days or so). Our neighbour, a great old lady, took care of our birds. When we got home she told me that the birds had been so sad, had hardly eaten, etc. At that day I took the decision that I wouldn't go away from home for more than one night as long as my birds would live. Well and I kept that promise. Everyone laughs with this and teases me with this but I always say : when you have animals you have to take care of them. And if that means 'no long holidays' that's ok with me.

So Thanks Goes To You & Him ... Anyhow, My Bird Died In My Hands Also & I Asure You It's An Experience Felt Like Non Other Of Losing A Pet! We Watched & Were With Our Dog Cari When He Died In My Kitchen. I Tried To Make His Final Hour A Peaceful One By Cleaning Him Everytime He Had Spit/Etc...Caressing His Back In That Final Hour...Talking Soothingly To Him With My Boys! It Was A New Journey For Me But I Washed Him From The Spitup & Showed My Boys That This Was Natural & His Time For Death... I Totally Understand The Leaving A Pet For A Duration & Surely When You're A Cat/Bird Owner... Cat's Tend To Snub You For Awhile & Birds Are Quite Emotional In The Term Of Humans! So, Whomever Teases Ya & JUST KIDDING

I too had a bunny rabbit, got it for my 5th birthday( the only time my birthday and Easter coincided). Named her Tug Boat Annie. Dad killed her and tried to tell me it was Chicken. To this day I only eat chicken breast, never legs or thighs, and I DON NOT!!!!!! eat rabbit ewwwwww
I now have 3 labs.. a black.. a chocolate.. and a yellow I'm a very proud mommy.
Not to mention the 350 head of cattle and the 9 horses. An animal lover from the get go. Just a small town country bumpkin ;D

When I was 18 or so I persuaded my parents that I could have another hamster (they didn't want me to because I was only home in the weekends because I was studying then). Finally I bought a hamster and called him Boris. In the petshop I asked : 'sure it's a boy?' 'Yes, yes, I'm sure.' A few weeks later I was studying in the living room, where Boris' cage was and he was sleeping and made strange noises. I thought Boris was having a bad dream. An hour later I checked on him again : and there was Boris surrounded with six tiny hamsters that looked like those gummybears you can eat. So Boris wasn't a boy afterall..

I don't know if it exists in Canada, but in Belgium you can take a special insurance for pets (well, some companies anyway). But ofcourse that's only interesting when you expect a lot of visits of the vet for your pets. Alligators

Thank AprilRain! Unfortunately my poor budgie died two weeks ago So I decided that TJ could use this pic as a tribute to my dear Mac (yeah, got my nickname from him). We had him for 14 years and he was such a cute thing. We miss him a lot.

you were asking about my dog TJ. His name is Spike and he is a two year old white boxer.I also had a brindle coloured boxer called Hannah but I had to get her put to sleep in January because she had cancer, the vet said they could give her chemotherapy but didn't think it would work and she was 11 years old so I didn't want to put her through that. My daughter Mel also has a rat called Corey and she also had one called Joey but he died last month. It's not been a good year for our pets so far
