« Reply #1 on: Dec 17th, 2003, 10:50am By: MAC »I've just finished a book from Jacob Hein, a German children's psychiatrist. He wrote about his childhood in the DDR before the Wall came down. The book is titled 'My first t-shirt' but I'm not sure if its translated in English too. The book is a whole bunch of short and funny stories about life in general in Ost-Berlin. As a kid Jacob is quite an obeying, easy-going kid. That is untill he get interested in punk-music. There's even an encounter with the Stasi as a result of that new passion. But Jacob is never bitter about his youth. He says : 'We just didn't know better.' On the other hand there's no sense of 'Ostalgy' in this book either.

I've just finished a book from Joanne Harris (wrote 'Chocolat' too) which is called 'Five quarters from the orange'. It is about an older woman who looks back upon her childhood in a small French village, during World War II. She, her sister and her brother were friends with a German soldier, but this friendship ends in a tragedy. Also her relationship with her mother, who is a very problematic woman, is an important issue. It's a book that touched me deeply, but there is also humour in it and cooking and eating (which always interests me) are major themes in this novel.
