Songwriter Mike Stoller is born.
- 1939
Neil Sedaka is born.
- 1960
Adam Clayton, bassist for U2, is born.
- 1965
" Cash Box " lists four Beatles singles in the top four positions on its chart: " She Loves You," " I Want to Hold Your Hand," " Please Please Me " & " Twist & Shout." All ready, " Meet the Beatles " has sold over 3-&-a-half million copies in the U.S. It's the most in recording history thus far.
- 1965
Freddie & the Dreamers' " I'm Telling You Now " enters the Hot 100, where it stays for eleven weeks, eventually climbing to Number One for two weeks starting April 10. It will be the biggest hit of the British Invasion band's brief career.
- 1965
The Kinks' " Tired of Waiting for You " is released & becomes their third Hot 100 entry. It will remain on the chart for eleven weeks, eventually climbing to #6.
- 1970
A group calling itself " Revolutionary Force 9 " takes credit for three bombings in New York City. The New York Times notes a " possible connection to the Beatles song 'Revolution 9."
- 1971
The Allman Brothers Band records its breakthrough album, " Live at the Fillmore East."
- 1976
The O'Jay's enter the charts with the double-sided hit " Livin' for the Weekend " backed with " Stairway to Heaven " (not the same as Led Zeppelin's version). The hit will go on to be one of the three R&B Number One smashes this year.
- 1980
Pink Floyd's " The Wall " goes platinum a few weeks into its fifteen week stay at Number One. The two-record set is largely the brainchild of bass player Roger Waters, who now emerges as the group's creative head.

Bryan Adams' " Heat of the Night " becomes the first commercially released cassette single, or cassingle, in the U.S.

Eric Clapton is admitted to United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota after a serious attack of bleeding ulcers. Clapton is forced to cancel a 60 date tour in the United States.

Legendary songwriter Jerome " Doc " Pomus died in New York of cancer. He wrote many, many hits, including " A Teenager In Love " for Dion & the Belmonts & the Drifters' " Save The Last Dance For Me."
- 1992
About 40,000 people attend Farm Aid Five in Irving, Texas. The show is hosted by Willie Nelson & features performances by John Mellencamp, Neil Young & Paul Simon.

A Jay & the Americans concert on Long Island was interrupted by a bomb threat. No bomb was found.

Singer Robert John scores with a remake of the Tokens' Number One hit " The Lion Sleeps Tonight." John's version goes Top Fifteen & earns him a gold record.

Los Angeles Radio station KHJ is raided by L.A. police after calls from listeners who feared there'd been a revolution at the station from 6:00 to 7:30 in the morning. DJ Robert W. Morgan had played Donny Osmond's " Puppy Love " over & over. The police left without making any arrests.

" American Hot Wax," a film about a week in the life of pioneer rock & roll disc jockey Alan Freed, premieres in New York. The soundtrack features Jackie Wilson, Buddy Holly, the Moonglows, Drifters, Spaniels, Cadillacs, Zodiacs & others.

Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Dusty Springfield, the Staples Singers, Del Shannon, Curtis Mayfield & The Beatles producer George Martin are among those inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Springfield died just 11 days before.

Shock rocker Marilyn Manson is injured after slipping & falling during a concert at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, CA. The concert ends early.

Roy Hamilton's " Unchained Melody " is released by Epic Records. The tune climbs to #6 & is later recorded by the Righteous Brothers in 1965.
- 1959
Plans are released for the first U.S. rock & roll package tour to hit Europe. Performers include Conway Twitty, Duane Eddy, Bobby Darin, Dale Hawkins, the Poni Tails, with guest star Cliff Richard. The event begins April 22 in London.

Peter, Paul & Mary's " Puff The Magic Dragon " is released.
- 1964
Capitol releases The Beatles " Can't Buy Me Love " 8-)backed with " You Can't Do That." Advanced orders are over one-&-a-half million. The song debuts at Number One.

Alan Freed is charged with tax evasion, the grand jury indictment stemming from the earlier payola investigation which ruined the career of the ex-DJ who helped put rock & roll in the forefront.
- 1970
Tammi Terrell, best known for her duets with Marvin Gaye, dies at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia after undergoing six brain tumor operations in 18 months. Doctors first discovered Terrell's brain tumor after she collapsed in Gaye's arms onstage in 1967. She was 24 years old.
- 1971
Bob Dylan's records " Watchin' the River Flow " with Leon Russell playing piano, which is released as a single & is later included on " Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Vol II."
- 1971
The 13th Annual Grammy Award Winners are announced & the big winners are: " Bridge Over Troubled Water " by Simon & Garfunkel (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists, Best Engineered Record & Best Contemporary Song).
- 1979
Twisted Sister, a Long Island bar band formed six years ago, is the first to headline & sell out New York City's 3,000 seat Palladium without the benefit of a record. It will be another three years until the band signs a record deal.

Billboard reports Ray Charles has started his own record label, Tangerine records.

The Bee Gees make their U.S. television debut on the " Ed Sullivan Show." They perform " To Love Somebody " & " Words."

Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumkins is born.
- 1982
Samuel George Jr., lead singer of the Capitols who had a 1966 hit " Cool Jerk," dies in Detroit after being stabbed with knife in a family argument. He was 39 years old.

Madonna holds the " world's biggest pajama party " as 1500 guests gather with PJ's & teddy bears. This was all for the premiere of her new " Bedtime Stories " video.

Bill Haley & the Comets are back from an eleven week tour of Australia, Europe & the British Isles. They played for a half-million fans.
- 1962
Gary " U.S." Bonds appears on " The Ed Sullivan Show" to perform his latest hit, " Twist, Twist, Senora."
- 1965
Rolling Stones Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & Bill Wyman engage in what police call " insulting behavior " in London. The " insulting behavior " turns out to be urinating on the wall of the Francis Garage, a gas station where the band members had sought use of the men's room; when the owner said it was out of order, they went. The owner brought on a private prosecution against the boys & each were fined five British pounds.

At 3 a.m., the staff of San Francisco's " progressive " rock station KMPX-FM walks out on strike citing a lack of control over programming & " hassles over the whole long-hair riff." Performers like the Rolling Stones, Joan Baez, the Jefferson Airplane & the Grateful Dead request the station not play their music as long as the station is run by strikebreakers.

Country Joe McDonald is convicted for obscenity & fined $500 for leading a crowd in his infamous Fish Cheer ( " Gimme an F..! " ) at a concert in Massachusetts. TJ Thinks ALL Of Rockstars Nowadays Would Be Arrested Then

Ringo Starr begins work on his documentary on Marc Bolan, " Born to Boogie," by filming T. Rex's concert at Wembley, England.

The Clash's first single, " White Riot " is released.
- 1978
The rock festival California Jam II is held in Ontario, California. 250,000 attend to hear the likes of Santana, Bob Welch, Aerosmith, Dave Mason, Heart, Ted Nugent & others.
- 1982
Teddy Pendergrass is severely injured in a car accident in Philadelphia. The disco-soul singing star ends up paralyzed from the waist down.
- 1989
Phil Collins & his wife Jill become parents to daughter Lily Jane.
- 1994
Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain has 4 guns & 25 boxes of ammo confiscated after his wife, Courtney Love calls police fearing he would commit suicide. He of course did commit suicide about 3 weeks later.
- 1994
The Rolling Stones announce Darryl Jones as the replacement for Bill Wyman on bass. Wyman had previously announced that he would no longer tour with the band.
- 1996
The Sex Pistols announce they are reuniting for a 20th anniversary tour. The world yawns.

Elvis buys a mansion in Memphis & dubs it Graceland.
- 1958
Big Records releases " Our Song," the first record by a teenage duo from Queens, New York, who go by the names of Tom & Jerry. The pair will become famous in the '60s under their real names, Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel.
- 1968
Bob Dylan's " John Wesley Harding " & the Jimi Hendrix Experience's debut LP, " Are You Experienced?," both are certified gold.
- 1974
The Jefferson Airplane began their first tour under the name Jefferson Starship. The line-up includes Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, drummer Johnny Barbata, David Freiberg, Peter Kaukonen, Cragi Chaquico & Papa John Creach.
- 1976
Former Free guitar player Paul Kossoff dies on a London-to-New York plane flight of unknown causes. The 26 year old has had health problems. In August of '75, his heart stopped beating for 35 minutes during surgery & he had been troubled with heart disease most of his life.
- 1980
Elvis Presley's autopsy is subpoened in the " Dr. Nick " drug case. " Dr. Nick " is Dr. George Nichopoulous, Presley's personal physician who will soon be found guilty of overprescribing drugs to Presley & other clients, including Jerry Lee Lewis.
- 1981
Styx's " Paradise Theatre " goes platinum. The album is a conceptual work, a path the group takes for it's next album as well. " Paradise Theatre " makes it Number One & gives the band two Top Ten hits, " The Best of Times " & " Too Much Time on My Hands."
- 1982
Randy Rhoads, the lead guitar player for Ozzy Osbourne, is killed in a freak accident in Leesburg, Florida when the plane he's riding in buzzes Osbourne's tour bus & crashes into a house. The plane's pilot & a female passenger also die. Randy Rhoads was 25 years old.
- 1996
The second installment of the Beatles " Anthology " series was released. It featured the song " Real Love ", a track the remaining members of the Beatles recorded using an old demo track of John Lennon's voice.
- 1999
Nude photos of Rolling Stone Keith Richards are published on the web by the Internet Entertainment Group, the same company that posted the infamous Pamela Anderson-Tommy Lee honeymoon sex video & nude photos of Mick Jagger's alleged mistress, Luciana Morad. The pictures of Richards shows him sunbathing in the nude while unsuccessfully trying to give himself satisfaction.

Fabulous Thunderbirds guitarist Jimmy Vaughn & Carl Palmer, drummer with Emerson, Lake & Palmer & Asia, are born.
- 1961
Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom is born.
- 1965
British Invasion band Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders enter the Hot 100 for the first time with " Game of Love." It stays on the charts for eleven weeks making it to Number One in April. Also on this date, Petula Clark's " I Know a Place " enters the Hot 100. It hangs around for 12 weeks evenutally hitting #3.

Eric Clapton & three members of the Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young , Richie Furay & Jim Mesina, are arrested in Los Angeles for " being at a place where it is suspected marijuana is being used. " It's a misdemeanor for which Clapton will later be found innocent, the others paying small fines .
- 1969
John Lennon & Yoko Ono are married in Gibraltar.
- 1970
David Bowie marries American-born model Angela Barnett in Bromley, England. She met him at a press reception for King Crimson's " In the Court of the Crimson King" in London in 1969.
- 1971
As of today, Iron Butterfly's " In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida " has been on the charts for 138 weeks & sold more than 3 million copies.
- 1972
Ringo Starr releases the second of his seven Top Ten singles, " Back Off, Boogaloo," produced by George Harrison.

Joseph Riveria, a 28 year old truck driver from Texas, walks in the the New York offices of Elektra/Asylum Records, draws a gun & takes the office manager hostage. He demands to see either Jackson Browne or the Eagles, from whom he wants money to finance his trucking operation. Eventually, Riviera surrenders to police without hurting anybody.

Gloria Estefan breaks several bones in her back when her tour bus is involved in an accident.
- 1991
Eric Clapton's 4 year old son, Conor, falls to his death from a 53rd story New York City apartment window. The tradegy inspires Clapton's song " Tears in Heaven."
- 1991
Michael Jackson signs the richest deal in recording history when Sony inked him to a $1 billion contract.

The re-formed Faces, with singer Rod Stewart, release their debut LP, "First Step."

" ABC " by the Jackson Five is released. The song is the group's second hit and also their second hit to go to #1!
- 1980
British punk rockers the Jam enter the U.K. singles chart at Number One with " Going Underground." It's the first single to enter the singles chart there at the top spot since Gary Glitter's " I Love You Love Me Love " in 1973.
- 1981
New wave pop rockers, Blondie, enter the soul LPs chart with " Autoamerican," which peaks at #7 in 25 weeks on the chart. It has climed to #7 on the pop chart. Keith Relf, harmonica player of Yardbirds, is born.
- 1955
Disc Jockey Alan Freed joins the staff of Coral records as an A&R man. His two year deal calls for him to work with Coral's parent Company, Decca, as a producer.
- 1956
Carl Perkins is injured in a car accident near Wilmington, Delaware enroute to New York City for an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Perkins has to spend several months in the hospital. By the time he recovers, Elvis Presley had covered his hit, " Blue Suede Shoes " & Perkins' career never recovered

Hank Williams Jr. makes his stage debut in Swainsboro, Georgia. He is the eight year old son of the late country singer (who past away New Year's Day 1953) & his wife, Audrey Williams.
- 1963
EMI-Parlophone releases the Beatles' first album, " Please Please Me " in the U.K. In just three weeks, it's Number One on the British charts.
- 1969
Two days after they are married in a private ceremony in Gibralter, John Lennon & Yoko Ono begin their first " bed-in for peace " in the presidential suite of the Amsterdam Hilton.
- 1972
Joe Tex earns a gold record for " I Gotcha," his biggest single success (#2). It's his first hit in four years.

Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter tells the audience at the National Association of Record Merchandisers' Scholarship Foundation Dinner that Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin & other bands inspired him while working late nights when he was the Governor of Georgia. To prove he would never lie to them, he quoted lines from the Beatles' " Yesterday" & Dylan's " Blowin' in the Wind."

Stevie Wonder releases the single, " Sir Duke. " The tune was a tribute to Duke Ellington & would spend 3 weeks at #1.
- 1978
Win Anderson, who has been promoting a benefit concert for environmentalist group, Friends of the Earth, holds a press conference in New York substantiating rumors of a Beatles reunion.
- 1979
A day before her own birthday, soul singer Chaka Khan gives birth to a son, Damien Milton Patrick Holland.
- 1982
Diana Ross' first solo album for RCA, " Why Do Fools Fall in Love," goes platinum less than three months after its release.
- 1986
Singer Mark Dinning dies of a heart attack at the age of 52. He was best known for his 1959 hit, " Teen Angel."
- 1989
Dick Clark announces he'll no longer host " American Bandstand," ending a 33-year run.
- 1994
Singer/Songwriter & producer Dan Hartman dies of a brain tumor in Westport, Connecticut. He was 43. He was best known for his hit, " I Can Dream About You."

Former Turtles drummer Don Murray dies of complications from an undisclosed surgery in Santa Monica. He was 50.

Thirty thousand people, including Jackie Gleason, Kate Smith, the Lettermen & Anita Bryant appear at the Rally for Decency in Miami. Announcements publicizing the rally warn " longhairs & weird dressers " won't be let inside. Four days later, President Richard Nixon sends a letter of congratulation & appreciation to the organizers of the rally.

" Derek & the Dominos in Concert," the two record set released well over a year after the short-lived group's break-up, goes gold.

Yoko Ono is granted permission to live in the U.S. permanently.
- 1975
San Francisco's Kezar Stadium is the site for a Bill Graham-run benefit show called SNACK (Students Need Athletics, Culture and Kicks). The Show features the Tower of Power, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Starship, Joan Baez, Graham Central Station, Neil Young & special guest Bob Dylan. It's to raise money for the San Francisco school system which recently canceled most sports & after-hour activites because of a $3-million budget deficit. Almost $200,000 is raised, but it's really not needed because the day before the event, an announcement is made that through a financial adjustment $2.1 million has been " found."

Rolling Stone reports Fleetwood Mac is working on final adjustments to perform as Moscow's 3,000 seat Russian Concert Hall on July 8, 9 & 10th. Their advisor, Michael Shapiro admits, " Everything of course, depends on world peace."
- 1978
" The Police " sign with A&M Records.
- 1985
Billy Joel marries Christy Brinkley in New York. They would divorce in 1994.
- 1988
Mick Jagger makes his first onstage solo appearance in Japan in front of a crowd of 46,000. The Rolling Stones had previously been banned from the country by Japanese authorities amid drug speculation.

The re-formed Drifters' " There Goes My Baby " is released on Atlantic Records. Not only is it the group's first disc with new lead singer Ben E. King replacing the departed Clyde McPhatter, but joining the production team are Herry Leiber & Mike Stoller.

On the first date of their anniversary tour, Rolling Stone bass player Bill Wyman is knocked unconscious by an electrical shock from a microphone stand in Odense, Denmark.

The New York State Assembly passes a bill making it a misdemeanor to sell unauthorized copies of records or tapes; such records are commonly known as bootlegs.

Twelve years after it was first a #2 hit for Paul Anka, " Puppy Love " by Donny Osmond climbs to #3 & goes gold. The tune also inspires lots of wisecracks about Osmond.

Lou Reed is bitten on his bottom by a fan at a concert in Buffalo, New York. The " display of affection" occurs while Reed is about to perform " Waitin' for the Man." Screaming " leather!," the fan gets past security as he assaults Reed. The fan is ejected & Reed comments after the show that the U.S. " seems to breed real animals."

The British courts grant British record companies the rights to seize bootleg & pirate recordings.

The Black Crowes were dropped as the opening act on ZZ Top's tour for repeatedly criticizing Miller Beer, who was sponsoring the tour.
