  "Ladies & Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones"
  opens at New York City's Ziegfeld Theatre.
  The premiere is turned into an event:
  a 40-foot high Rolling Stone winged tongue
  that rises in the air,
  2,000 white doves are released

  a 65-foot long dragon

  The California Jam Rock Festival
  pulls in 200,000 people to see such acts as
  Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Black Sabbath,
  Deep Purple, Black Oak Arkansas & The Eagles.
  The event runs with no problems,

  Blondie
  The punk/new wave group
  has its first big hit in the U.S. with
  "Heart Of Glass."
  The tune goes platinum on this date,

  Kurt Cobain commits suicide

  Jan Berry,
  half of the hit-making surf-rock vocal duo
  Jan & Dean,
  runs his Corvette into an parked truck
  on L.A.'s Whittier Boulevard.
  Berry suffers total physical paralysis
  for over a year as well as extensive
  brain damage which makes it
  nearly impossible to return to performing.
  They do give it a try in 1973
  but it turns out to be a fiasco.

  Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's
  live Four Way Street is certified gold
  even before it hits the LP chart.
  The double record set makes it to #1
  giving the quartet the distinction of
  two - #1, albums in two tries.
  It's the last LP the four will record together

  Rolling Stone
  reports a Buffalo Springfield reunion
  may be in the works.
  Says original member
  Richie Furay now with Poco,

1994, Crash Test Dummies kicked off an 8-date UK tour at Rock City, Nottingham.

1993, Meat Loaf had his first UK No.1 with ' I'd Do Anything For Love' (But I Won't Do That'). It stayed at No.1 for seven weeks.

1993, Take That scored their first UK No.1 album with 'Everything Changes.'

1989, Nirvana played their first ever European show when the appeared at Newcastle's Riverside Club in North East England. It was the first night of a 36 date European tour sharing the bill with Tad.

1988, On the UK CD chart; Luther Vandross at No.3 with 'Any Love', No.2 U2 'Rattle and Hum' & No.1 Dire Straits 'Money For Nothing'. The 12 inch chart, Milli Vanilli 'Girl You Know It's True' at No.3, Enya 'Orinoco Flow' at No.2 & No.1 D Mob 'We Call It Acieed.'

1987, The film 'Who's That Girl'' starring Madonna opened in London.

1984, Sade kicked off a 12-date UK tour at Newcastle City Hall.

1982, The Damned released an album titled 'Strawberries' packaged with a Strawberry-smelling lyric sheet.
