Army reserve Lieutenant Buddy Knox whose " Party Doll " was a recent #1, is called up for six months of active duty. Roulette Records' A&R team, Hugo Peretti & Luigi Creatore rush Knox to the studio to cut over 20 songs to ensure his career does not stall while he's in uniform. It does anyway.

Alice Cooper's 1st TV special, " Welcome To My Nightmare: The Making Of A Record Album" airs.
- 1981
YES British progressive rock band announces its break-up. During its 13-yr career, the group became one of the world's most popular exponents of intricate, mystical, symphonic rock, despite the fact that they only had one big chart hit, " Roundabout." It went to #13 in 1972. Of course, they reunite on numerous occasions over the years.
- 1985
Wham's " Make It Big " LP is released in China, making it the 1st Western album to be released there.
- 1988
The Motown songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland is inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The film T.A.M.I. (Teen-Age Music International) Show featuring the Rolling Stones, Supremes Four Tops, Beach Boys, James Brown & Smokey Robinson & the Miracles opens in London under the title Teenage Command Performance.

" Somethin' Stupid " by Frank & Nancy Sinatra is certified gold. Though each has had hits, this is their only collaboration to meet with any success.
- 1968
John Lennon, George Harrison & their wives leave the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram in Rishikesh, India two weeks before their study is complete. Ringo Starr & Paul McCartney have already left. Later, all four Beatles will renounce t heir association with the Maharishi.

Roberta Flack is awarded a gold record for " First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," the #1 - 45 for six weeks in the spring. The former schoolteacher from North Carolina will continue to have a string of hits, several of them recorded with singer Donny Hathaway.

Van McCoy's " The Hustle " enters the pop and R&B charts where it will later top both. The instrumental song is inspired by the dance of the same name & McCoy becomes one of the first industry people to get into the disco music scene.

Arista Records releases the Patti Smith Group's single " Because the Night." It is co-written by Smith & Bruce Springsteen & will become Smith's only charting single making it to #13 later in the year.

Over 40 rock & roll performers petition President Jimmy Carter to end America's commitment to nuclear power. Some of the artists include Jackson Browne, the Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Carly Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor & others. They get together later on & do an anti-nuclear benefit concert.

Brian Johnson replaces the late Bon Scott as AC/DC's lead singer. Later in the month, the band begins recording Back In Black.

Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel, fresh from the success of their New York Central Park concert the year before, reunite for a European tour. The U.S. leg doesn't go through due renewed tensions between the duo.
- 1988
The late Sonny Bono is inaugurated as the Mayor of Palm Springs.
- 1999
The Madison Square Garden marquee in New York reads " Bob Dylan, Tonight at 8pm." Problem was that Neil Young was scheduled to appear, not Dylan. Dylan's name was lopped off before the concert, but after Young finished a song during the show, he quips, " That was Bob playing guitar with me on the last song."

Phil Collins wins a royalties lawsuit against two former members of Earth Wind & Fire who were part of Collins's backup band on his Serious Hits -- Live album.

Dolly Parton's first record, " Puppy Love," is released on Gold Band Records. Billboard's capsule review notes, " She sounds about 12 years old." She happens to be 13 years old. ;D
- 1960
Elvis Presley's return to Hollywood to film " G.I. Blues " is greeted by tremendous fanfare. Of course, it's the top story on the nightly news & even makes page one of the local newspapers.
- 1968
The band Deep Purple, composed of Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Rod Evans & Nick Semper, perform their concert debut in Tastrup, Denmark.
- 1969
The L.A. Free Festival in Venice, California ends in violence before it really begins with lots hurt & 117 arrested. The trouble started when police chased one youth through the crowd on the beach. When they cuffed him, the crowd started chanting " Pig, pig, pig! " A riot ensued & none of the bands scheduled to play appeared.
- 1970
The New York Times reports Catholic & Protestant youth groups have adopted the Yellow Submarine as a religious symbol.
- 1976
The Rolling Stones' " Black & Blue " album is released & though the critics give it a lukewarm response & feminist protest of an ad campaign which featured a photograph of a bound & bruised model, it reaches Number One & goes platinum in two months.
- 1981
One time member of the Mamas & the Papas, John Phillips is put behind bars in Los Angeles after pleading guilty to drug possesion charges. His five year sentence will be suspended after thirty days in exchange for 250 hours worth of community service.
- 1991
Steve Marriot of the Small Faces dies in a house fire. He was 44 years old.
- 1999
Billy Joel performs what he says is his last public pop music concert at the Medowlands in New Jersey. He plans on devoting his efforts to classical music.
- 2000
Robert Plant appears at Disney's Theatre of the Stars in Orlando, Florida to leave his handprints outside the theatre.

John Lennon changes his name from John Winston Lennon to John Ono Lennon during a short ceremony on the roof of the Apple Records building in London.

Bob Dylan & his Rolling Thunder Revue tape a show at the Belleview Biltmore Hotel in Clearwater, Florida. " Midnight Special " was auctioned off to NBC, however, Dylan scrapped the footage & went with a later show taped in Fort Collins, Colorado called " Hard Rain."

Johnnie Taylor's " Disco Lady " becomes the 1st single ever to sell over 2 million copies.

John Belushi & Dan Aykroyd make their 1st ever appearance as The Blues Brothers on " Saturday Night Live," The duo opened the show with " Hey Bartender " with an intro by Paul Schaffer acting as Don Kirschner.

Bob Marley & the Wailers perform at the One Love Peace Concert in Jamaica. It was Marley's 1st public appearance in Jamaica since being wounded in an assassination attempt a year and a half earlier.

Gerry Rafferty's " Baker Street " is released.
- 1979
As part of his sentence for his 1977 Canadian drug arrest, Rolling Stone Keith Richards performs a benefit concert in Oshawa for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Richards' band, making its debut, is the New Barbarians. It's made up of Richards, Rolling Stone guitarist Ron Wood plus bass player Stanley Clarke, Ian McLagan on keyboards & drummer Ziggy Modeliste. The group leaves shortly on a big tour of U.S., but never records.

The J. Geils band makes it comeback with " Love Stinks," its 2nd album on its new label, EMI America. The LP goes to #18 & turns gold.
- 1981
After being released from St. Paul's Hospital in Minnesota on April 17, following a month-long treatment for bleeding ulcers, Eric Clapton is put back in the hospital. This time in Seattle, Washington when Clapton suffers bruised ribs & a lacerated shin in a car accident.

Elvis Presley, accompanied by Bill Black & Scotty Moore, makes his Las Vegas debut at the New Frontier Hotel, where he is the opening act for the Freddie Martin Orchestra & comedian Shecky Greene. The two week run is called off after only one week due to poor reception, Presley won't play Las Vegas again for almost 13 years.

The Rolling Stones begin their third North American tour with a show at the Forum in Montreal.
- 1969
The Ash Grove, a Los Angeles folk-blues club where such performers as Canned Heat, the Chambers Brothers & Taj Mahal got their acts going, burns down. However a new incarnation of the club opened on the Santa Monica Pier in 1996.

Norman Greenbaum's " Spirit in the Sky " goes gold.
- 1975
Peter Ham, guitarist and songwriter for Badfinger, hangs himself in his London garage. He was reported to be deeply depressed by financial problems the group was having. He was 27 years old.

Ex-Sex Pistol bass player Sid Vicious films his rendition of Paul Anka's " My Way " for the Sex Pistols' film " The Great Rock n' Roll Swindle."

Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis & Carl Perkins reunite in Stuttgart, Germany & record what is later released next year as " The Survivors."
- 1987
Carole King sues record company owner Lou Adler for breach of contract. King claims that she was owed over $400,000 in royalties. She also asks for rights to her old recordings.

The 16 year old Nelson is well known to millions of Americans from his appearances on television's popular " Adventure of Ozzie & Harriet," which stars his parents. His record will sell almost 60,00 copies within three days. ;D

Dion & the Belmonts' first single, " I Wonder Why " b/w " Teen Angel " is released.
- 1959
" Your Hit Parade," the Saturday night pop music show which has been on the air since April 23, 1935, & just recently on television, is given its last broadcast.

Bob Dylan earns a $50 session fee for playing harmonica on Harry Belafonte's song " Midnight Special."

Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane is invited to a party at the White House by Tricia Nixon, daughter of the President. Slick shows up with " escort " Abbie Hoffman. He is on trial for conspiring to riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention & is turned away at the gate. Slick leaves as well without having met Ms. Nixon or introducing her to tea laced with LSD, as Slick suggested she would.

Bill Wyman describes the Rolling Stones' 16th LP, " Sticky Fingers," as a move " back with the blues that made us."

One of John Lennon's most controversial singles, " Woman Is the black person of the World," is released. The song goes to #57 despite virtually every radio station in the country refusing to play it.

As half-dozen teenage girls faint a & several other youths sustain cuts in a stampede which occurs prior to a Jethro Tull concert. An estimated 2,500 young persons press into the lobby of Long Island's Nassau Coliseum to purchase tickets, resulting in the summoning of 100 police, as well as a box-office window being smashed.

Grand Funk Railroad receives a gold record for their update of Little Eva's " The Loco-motion," the biggest hit of ther career as it makes it to Number One.

The road crew for Roger Waters discovers an unexploded World War II era bomb while constructing the set for " The Wall " concert in Potsdamer Platz, Germany.

David Bowie & fashion model Iman are married in a secret ceremony in Switzerland. The wedding was not announced until more than a week later.

About 40,000 people showed up for Farm Aid 6. Willie Nelson, John Cougar Mellencamp & Neil Young were among 40 artists who played at the concert in Ames, Iowa.

The Beatles refuse to perform for the Queen of England at a British Olympic Appeal Fund show. Ringo Starr explains, " Our decision would be the same no matter what the cause. We don't do benefits."

After playing a concert in Raleigh, North Carolina, where men in the crowd taunted the interracial band with Racial Insults. Pacific Gas & Electric is shot at as its van leaves the club. Four bullets hit the vehicle but no one is hurt.

According to Rolling Stone, thanks to Ray Stevens' hit, " The Streak," streakers have hit concerts by Yes, Gregg Allman & the Beach Boys, who were victimized by two of their very own -- Mike Love & Dennis Wilson.

The New York Times reports R&B immortal Ray Charles will undergo tests in a Boston hospital to see whether or not he has abstained from narcotic drugs.

CBS-TV broadcasts " Inside Pop -- The Rock Revolution." Among the guests that host Leonard Bernstein has on is 16 year old Janis Ian, who sings " Society Child." A year before the song was banned by some radio stations because of its subject (an interracial love affair). Following her television appearance, the song races into the Top Twenty.

New York's legendary disco Studio 54 opens its doors. ;D
- 1978
Ringo Starr's TV special, " Ringo " a musical version of " The Prince and the Pauper " airs on American television. Ringo played both characters. George Harrison provides the narration but it still get low number finishing 53 out of 65 shows.

Rod Stewart is mugged in Los Angeles in broad daylight & is robbed of his $50,000 Porsche. He was not hurt.

On his way to the Clash's West London rehearsal studio, lead singer Joe Strummer gets on a train for the English coast & then takes a ferry across the channel to France. His disapearances forces the band to cancel their tour of the U.K. & puts their June tour of the U.S. in trouble. He shows up in London on May 18 & says exhaustion & doubts about his career drove him to Paris. Two days after he's back, the Clash surprises the audience at an outdoor festival in Holland with an unscheduled concert.

5150, the first Van Halen album to feature Sammy Hagar, tops the charts for the first of four weeks. The album is named after the New York police code for the criminally insane & Eddie Van Halen's recording studio.

The historic Fillmore club reopens in San Francisco.

Grace Slick pleads guilty to pointing a shotgun at police in her Tiburon, California home on March 5, 1994. She claims she was under stress because her Mill Valley home had burned down the previous fall, & she lost most of her possessions. On June 7, she is sentenced to 200 hours of community service & four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week for three months.

Courtney Love of Hole reportedly turns down Playboy magazine's $1 million offer for her to pose nude.

However, rioting starts when police start busting people for possession. 76 people are arrested & lots more are rushed to the first aid tents.

As of this last show in a five-night engagement at the Los Angeles Sports Arena by Pink Floyd, 511 fans have been arrested for various offenses, mostly marijuana possession. During the third night of the event, L.A. Police Chief Ed Davis is quoted during a Rotary Club speech as saying, " Tonight at the Sports Arena, they have a dope festival. It's called a rock concert or something."

David Bowie was delayed for several hours on the border between Russia & Poland while customs officials confiscate Nazi memorabilia. The material was for research on a film about Nazi official Joseph Goebbels.

Stevie Wonder makes a surprise appearance at a Duke Ellington tribute concert at UCLA's Royce Hall. He performs " Sir Duke & Ellington's - C-Jam Blues."

Three years & a day after opening its doors, New York's legendary disco, Studio 54 shuts down due to numerous questionable activities.

Andrew Loog Oldham, a 19 year old music-business publicist & former associate of Brian Epstein, catches a gig by the Rolling Stones at the Crawdaddy Club in London. The next day Oldham will sign the Stones to their first management contract. The band held their first recording session 2 weeks later.
- 1967
" This Diamond Ring " by Gary Lewis & the Playboys is certified gold. Though he has more Top Twenty hits, this is Lewis' only gold record.
- 1968
After six months at the off-Broadway New York Shakespeare Festival Theater, Hair opens at the Biltmore Theater in New York. It's the first rock-musical to play on the Great White Way. It goes to give 1,729 performances on Broadway & is made into a movie in 1979.
- 1971
Barbara Streisand gets a gold album for " Stoney End," one of her rare forays into rock music. At 28 years old, Streisand is intent on changing her image & takes to lighting joints onstage in Las Vegas.

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon tops the chart for one week. The album has the longest chart life o n the Billboard album charts.
- 1976
The Rolling Stones begin a two-month tour of Europe at the Festhalled in Frankfurt, Germany. The show makes their first appearance on the continent in three years.

The Clash start their first tour of the U.K. with a May Day celebration at the Roxy in London. The 40 day White Riot Tour brings a show to London's Rainbow Theater.
